Naïve Art by Y.L.R. is the wearable side of

my painting practice.

I am Yahaira Lidia Reyes-Forkan, a Dominican

painter who has lived in Europe — the

Netherlands and Ireland — for more than two

decades. The same hands that paint the

canvases paint these bags. The same visual

language too: Afro-Caribbean women, hibiscus, music, full moons, gold.

Every piece is one of a kind. I use heavyweight cotton canvas and fabric-safe acrylics, heat-set so the colour lasts. Each bag is signed Y.L.R. on the front, with a care card included.

I think of these objects as a way to bring naïve art — bold, joyful, unapologetic — into everyday life, at a price that doesn't require a collector's budget.
